We came across this skillet from a collection and absolutely fell in love with its design.  Made by inventor P.P. Stewart in the early to mid 1800's.  This one, we've learned is made from a very popular pattern first made by Stewart, who was a widely lauded designer and entrepreneur.  As we learned more from general consensus, it seems that the "PPS" pattern was often copied by mid 1800 American foundries because of its superior balance, handling and overall attractiveness.  This is an authentic one.  We've seen them in 10's, 11's and 12.  The pan is gorgeous for being handmade during the Civil War era!  Smooth clean cooking surface, thick but not heavy to handle at all and balanced exceptionally well.  Its so hard to let go of these pieces when you get a chance to use them and on the stove it performs as good if not better than the popular brand names.  We see why these were so copied and popular.

Background on Gate Marking: Gate marking is a term used in describing pieces that were cast prior to very early 1900, when gate mark casting became obsolete. Many foundries during this time are considered "no name" or "unknown" foundries, and produced cookware locally without consideration a future need to know their origins! So while its virtually impossible to know the exact date and location of their creation, they were most likely manufactured in the mid atlantic/ohio area. However this is a best guess at best! This pan has been restored and seasoned three times in organic beef tallow. Its got a cool handle reminiscent of the fancy handles, and is a great piece to cook with OR to display in your gourmet kitchen.
