About Cast & Clara Bell
New here? Start with these. Learn who we are, why we do what we do, and what sets us apart from anyone else doing this work.
Cast & Clara Bell is a family-run small business built around a very personal story. Clara Bell was our grandmother β a southern seamstress by trade and an extraordinary cook. Her number 8 Lodge skillet and Dutch Oven were a fixture at every Sunday Supper we can remember. She loved to cook, sew, laugh, and chase her grandsons around the house.
She would not like all the fuss about her, and that is exactly why we honor her name. Every piece we restore is a tribute to that tradition of cooking with heart, with history, and with cast iron that lasts for generations.
We specialize in fully restored, ready to cook antique and vintage American cast iron cookware. Every piece we sell has been sourced, rescued, cleaned, refinished, and conditioned by hand before it reaches you. Our inventory includes skillets, fry pans, griddles, Dutch ovens, waffle irons, gem pans, muffin pans, bailed griddles, kettles, sad irons, trivets, lids, and specialty pieces. We also carry repurposed pieces created from cast iron that could not be safely restored for cooking.
We are proud to say yes. Cast & Clara Bell has been featured in the 2023 Wall Street Journal Holiday Gift Guide, Martha Stewart Living Magazine, and a number of other publications over the years. We have built a loyal following through our website at CastandClaraBell.com and we handle every single piece personally. We are not a warehouse. Every order goes through our hands.
We rescue cast iron from everywhere. Barns, basements, estate sales, auctions, flea markets, and private collections. Many of these pieces have sat forgotten for decades and it is genuinely one of our favorite parts of this work to find them, evaluate them, restore them, and give them a proper second life.
We also consign pieces from collectors, so if you would like to find out more about consignment please email us at restore@castandclarabell.com.
We publish new pieces every weekend. The best way to get first access is to sign up for our email newsletter. Subscribers see new inventory before it goes public. You can also follow us on Facebook and Instagram for behind the scenes looks at pieces we are currently working on.
Our Restoration Process
What actually happens to a piece before it reaches your door? Here is a look at how we bring neglected cookware back to life.
Every piece goes through our eco-friendly, chemical-free restoration process using a method called electrolysis. This removes decades of rust, old seasoning, and grime while preserving the integrity of the original iron. It is a gentle process compared to harsh stripping methods and it does not damage the metal.
After cleaning and a thorough inspection, we apply our proprietary Cast Iron Conditioning Balm by hand. Our balm is crafted from organic beef tallow, beeswax, and avocado oil β completely seed free and made specifically for cast iron. Because we use organic beef tallow as an ingredient, your piece may arrive with a light scent of tallow. This is completely normal and it is actually protecting your piece during its journey to you.
Please note: the idea that cast iron needs to be nonstick comes from a misunderstanding of how it works. True cooking performance in cast iron comes from proper heat management, not from the oil or seasoning alone. We prepare every piece to perform beautifully, and the rest comes with how you cook.
Yes. We use electrolysis, which relies on water, washing soda, and a low electrical current to safely lift rust and old buildup from the iron. No harsh stripping chemicals, no lye baths, no toxic dips. The process is safe for the iron, better for the environment, and produces a piece that is completely food safe when it leaves our hands.
Yes. Every piece we ship has been fully restored and conditioned with our Cast Iron Conditioning Balm. It is ready for immediate use. You do not need to do anything to it before cooking. Just heat it up, cook with confidence, and enjoy. The more you cook with it, the better it gets over time.
Rarely, we come across a piece that should not be restored, either because its condition is too compromised or because restoring it would actually diminish its value as a collector piece. If we have not restored something, that will be clearly noted in the listing so you always know exactly what you are getting. In those cases our local artisan may transform the piece into a one of a kind repurposed item such as a custom spatula, wall clock, or serving board.
Our Cast Iron Conditioning Balm
We developed our own balm because we were not satisfied with what was available. Here is what makes it different and why we think you will love it.
Our Cast Iron Conditioning Balm is made from three ingredients: organic beef tallow, beeswax, and avocado oil. That is it. No fillers, no synthetic additives, and most importantly no seed oils. We developed this formula ourselves because we wanted something that would truly protect and condition cast iron the way it was meant to be cared for, without any of the controversy surrounding modern seed-based oils.
Seed oils have become a widely discussed and genuinely controversial topic in the health and wellness space. Many people are actively choosing to avoid them in their cooking and in the products they use. Because cast iron is a cooking surface that interacts directly with your food, we felt strongly that our conditioning product should reflect the same values we bring to everything else we do.
Our balm is completely seed free. It is made with ingredients that have been used on cookware for generations, and we are proud to offer something that feels as clean and intentional as the cookware itself.
After cooking and cleaning your piece, while it is still warm, apply a very thin amount of balm to the cooking surface and the exterior. Wipe it in well and then wipe off as much as you can. You want the thinnest possible layer, just enough to protect the iron. Store in a dry place. That is really all there is to it. The balm keeps your iron protected, conditioned, and ready to cook beautifully every time.
We do! Our Cast Iron Conditioning Balm is available in three sizes so you can find the right amount for how you cook. Whether you have one treasured piece or a full collection, we have you covered. Shop our Cast Iron Conditioning Balm collection here.
The Cast Iron Brands We Carry
American cast iron has a rich history of foundries and makers. Here is a primer on the names you will find in our shop and what makes each of them worth knowing.
We carry all pieces. Our inventory spans historic American foundries including Griswold, Wagner, WagnerWare, Erie, Griswold's Erie, Sidney Holloware, Wapak, Lodge, Favorite Piqua, Marietta, Orr and Painter, E.C. Simmons, G.F. Filley and Sons, Birmingham Stove and Range, Vollrath, Chicago Hardware Foundry, Martin Stove and Range, Foster Stove Company, and many more. We also carry gate marked, unmarked, and regional foundry pieces.
From everyday users to rare collector grade pieces, we love them all and you will find the full range represented in our shop.
Griswold Manufacturing Company, based in Erie, Pennsylvania and operating from the 1860s through the 1950s, is the most widely recognized name in American cast iron. Their reputation comes from exceptionally thin walls, beautifully machined cooking surfaces, and decades of consistent quality. There is a reason collectors seek them out.
That said, one of the most exciting things we have discovered in this work is that every brand has its own unique and genuinely compelling features. Over time we have developed a deep appreciation for what makes each foundry special, and our customers feel the same way. While Griswold is the most recognized name, personal preference among serious collectors varies widely. You will find collectors who prefer Wagner for its weight and heat distribution, others who swear by Wapak, and enthusiasts who hunt specifically for Sidney or Filley pieces. It is not that Griswold is bad by any stretch. It is more that once you start cooking with a variety of vintage pieces, you often discover that your favorite is not necessarily the most famous one. That is part of what makes collecting so addictive.
The size number on vintage cast iron is a pattern number, not a measurement in inches. Originally, in the era of wood burning stoves, these numbers referred to which stove eye a piece was designed to fit over. After the 1920s or so, as wood stoves gave way to modern ranges, the numbers became more of a standard way to identify size rather than any specific measurement.
As a rough guide: a number 3 runs about 6.5 inches, number 5 about 7.5, number 6 about 8.5, number 7 about 9, number 8 about 10.5 inches which is the most versatile and commonly used size, number 9 about 11 inches, number 10 about 11.75, and number 12 around 13.5 inches. We always include the actual diameter measurement in each listing so you know exactly what you are getting.
A heat ring is a raised ring on the bottom of a skillet that was originally designed to sit over the eye of a wood burning stove. Once wood stoves became obsolete, heat rings became less important and were often removed or simply not included in newer production. These days a heat ring is really more of an aesthetic and collector detail than a functional one.
Both heat ring and smooth bottom pieces work beautifully on all modern cook surfaces including gas, electric, induction, and open flame. If you love the look of a heat ring piece, wonderful. If you prefer a smooth bottom, that cooks just as well. It is entirely a matter of personal preference.
Condition and What to Expect
Understanding how we evaluate and describe our pieces helps you shop with complete confidence.
We describe every piece honestly in its listing and we photograph it thoroughly. We look at the cooking surface, structural integrity, handle condition, logo clarity, and the overall character of the piece after restoration. We are transparent about anything worth noting and we welcome questions before you buy. If you want additional photos of a specific area, just ask. We are happy to provide them.
These are antique pieces, some of them over a hundred years old. They carry the natural marks of their history. Small surface variations, residual carbon, and the subtle character that only time can create are part of what makes each piece one of a kind. We consider those things part of the story, not a flaw.
Pitting refers to small surface depressions in the iron caused by rust over many years of neglect. It is common in antique cast iron and we do not believe it affects cooking at all. Stickiness on a cast iron surface comes from improper heat management, not surface texture. Once a piece is properly conditioned and cooked with correctly, the surface performs beautifully regardless of minor pitting. We will always note pitting in a listing so you can see it clearly in the photos, but it is not something that should concern you from a cooking standpoint.
Rarely, and only in cases where a piece should not be restored, either because its condition does not warrant it or because its value as a collector piece would be diminished by the process. If we have not restored something it will be clearly noted in the listing. You will never be surprised.
Cooking and Care
New to vintage cast iron? Here is what every cook needs to know to get great results and keep your piece performing for generations.
While still warm, wipe out any food with a cloth or paper towel. For anything stuck, add a little water, heat briefly, and use a scrub brush or one of our durable pot scrapers to loosen it. Rinse with warm water and avoid soaking. Dry it immediately and completely. A minute or two on low heat on the stovetop does the job. Then apply a thin layer of our Cast Iron Conditioning Balm, wipe it off as thoroughly as you can so only a whisper of it remains, and store in a dry place. That is it. Never use the dishwasher.
A small amount of mild dish soap used occasionally will not ruin your piece. Modern soaps are far less harsh than the old lye-based soaps that gave rise to the "never use soap" rule. That said, you genuinely do not need soap to get a thoroughly clean piece. Warm water, a good scrub brush, and immediate drying are almost always enough. If you do use soap, follow up with a thin wipe of the conditioning balm.
If your piece ever loses its conditioning from a long soak, an accidental dishwasher run, or a rust spot, it can absolutely be brought back. Scour off any rust with steel wool, wash with warm soapy water, and dry completely. Apply a very thin, even coat of our Cast Iron Conditioning Balm across the entire piece including the outside and handle. Wipe off all excess so only the thinnest possible layer remains. Place upside down in a 450 to 500 degree oven for one hour with foil below to catch any drips. Let it cool in the oven and repeat two or three times for best results. Cast iron is essentially indestructible as long as it is not cracked. It can always come back.
With a well conditioned piece, cooking occasional acidic foods is perfectly fine. The conditioning layer acts as a protective barrier. We would suggest waiting until you have cooked with your piece several times before doing a long slow acidic cook like a tomato sauce, just to let the conditioning build up through regular use. Once you have that foundation established you can cook just about anything with confidence.

Yes. Every single order ships fully insured. This is not an add-on or an option, it is standard on every purchase. If something goes wrong in transit you are completely protected and you will not be left to navigate a carrier claim on your own. We handle it.
We ship via UPS and USPS. Once your order ships you will receive a tracking number by email so you can follow your package all the way to your door.
Do not panic. Photograph everything before you remove any packaging, the outer box, the inner wrapping, and the piece itself. Then contact us right away with your order number and those photos. We will take it from there. You will not be left stranded and we will work with you until we find a resolution you are happy with.
Not at this time. We currently ship within the United States only. We hope to offer international shipping in the future and will announce it when we do.
Returns and Refunds
We have a seven day return policy from the date of delivery. If you change your mind about a piece, reach out to us within that window and we will provide instructions. The buyer is responsible for purchasing the return shipping label. Once we receive the piece and inspect it, a refund is issued. The piece does need to be in resalable condition to qualify for a refund, meaning it should be returned in the same condition it was received. If you have any questions about whether your situation qualifies, just email us and we will talk it through.
It happens, and we understand. Sometimes a piece looks a little different in person than it did on screen. As long as you reach out within seven days of delivery we will walk you through the return process. Our goal is for every customer to end up with something they truly love.
