It was caked on with what looked like generations of cooking, and after it came out to be finished we were blown away. Gate-marking on the bottom of the pan dates the piece prior to 1905 as casting practices improved generally past that point in time. Read description
See our full catalog along with helpful tips and tricks at castandclarabell.com/?utm_source=EL
What an amazing hard to find piece, that was unfortunately altered by someone trying to make it flat. This is a late 1800‘s #11 DEEP skillet, that has "A P" on it as well as its #11 marker. This pan is not seen often in the deep version, so we were so excited to get it, until we turned it over! Someone tried to make it flat and they ground off the heat ring. Why someone would try to do this is only conjecture but we think its because they thought it would be flat after grinding. Well, it isn‘t, so unfortunately it comes with some scars, and we are pricing it to sell. This would be a $300 skillet without the alteration. So we have marked it down to $200.
If you‘re searching for some unique cast iron to add to your collection, consider adding this gate marked #8 skillet. It looks as if it were made from a late 1800‘s pattern, possibly Mid-Atlantic/OH. The double spouts were from after the 1860‘s era of single pour spouts but we will defer to much more informed gate mark experts. It‘s so hard to know exactly the origins or dates of these pieces. We absolutely love this one and whoever picks it up will be very pleased with how it performs on a gas or electric coil stove.

Background on Gate Marking: Gate marking is a term used in describing pieces that were cast prior to very early 1900, when gate mark casting became obsolete. Many foundries during this time are considered "no name" or "unknown" foundries, and produced cookware locally without consideration a future need to know their origins! So while its virtually impossible to know the exact date and location of their creation, they were most likely manufactured in the mid atlantic/ohio area. Ornate fancy handles, awesome for cooking & display SC24
The late 18th Century Gate Marked long griddle has been restored from over a century of use, and is now back to life in fantastic working condition for you or as a gift for the home chef. Its a number 8 which is perfect for utility cooking AND for display with its ornate unique fancy handles that sit off the surface so they are easier to handle when over two burners. The bottom surface is in very good shape but it does NOT sit flat. Best for in the oven or for gas and electric coil. The depth of the griddle is about 1 inch so it is not suited for deep frying. Its often referred to as a fish fry, or sad iron heater, as is indicative of its function, but previous customers have told us they use them for conversation starting center pieces as well! The handles sit off the surface so they are easier to handle when over two burners. The bottom surface is in wonderful condition and sits flat enough to be used on any cooking surface. The depth of the griddle is about 1 inch so it is not suited for deep frying. Its often referred to as a fish fry, or sad iron heater, as is indicative of its function, but previous customers have told us they use them for conversation starting center pieces as well! Perfect for cooking bacon, pancakes, or other proteins. It has been stripped using a lye bath and electrolysis, and has been seasoned 3 times with our beef tallow so its Ready to use!

DISCLAIMER: We have prepared this piece to be ready to use or displayed in a collection.
