Its often referred to as a fish fry, or sad iron heater, as is indicative of its function, but previous customers have told us they use them for conversation starting center pieces as well! It was caked on with what looked like generations of cooking, and after it came out to be finished we were blown away.  Gate-marking on the bottom of the pan dates the piece prior to 1905 as casting practices improved generally past that point in time.  The handle is reminiscent of Highland Foundry‘s fancy handles so its most likely Massachusetts made.  The heat ring is in immaculate condition, as is the original swirling that you see on the surface of the pan.  The handle sits comfortably in your hand, which is important when using this piece in your gourmet kitchen. Super versatile and very light to work with, it is similar to the gate marked sad iron heaters often seen.  In the early 1900‘s, prior to the name \"Griswold\" being fashioned on the most popular vintage cast iron cookware with the famous cross logo, they used the name Erie on all of their items.  Some of the most sought after cast skillets were made by Griswold under the Erie name and were made prior to 1910.  This version was made in the early 1900‘s, and features both the slant logo and the Erie brands.\u003cbr\u003e\nThis is a fantastic, light weight long griddle, perfect for grilled cheese or pancakes over the fire or in your gourmet kitchen.  It isn‘t the widest griddle, but it can convert to a small fish fryer as well!  It does NOT sit flat on a glass top because it was made for an open hole in a wood stove.  While this isn‘t a skillet, it could affect performance on the stove if glass or induction.  Ours isn‘t perfectly flat and we use it on our induction top.  Its surface is slick and ready to use, being fully restored and seasoned three times with our oil blend. The bottom surface is in very good shape but it does NOT sit flat.  Best for in the oven or for gas and electric coil.  The depth of the griddle is about 1 inch so it is not suited for deep frying.  Its often referred to as a fish fry, or sad iron heater, as is indicative of its function, but previous customers have told us they use them for conversation starting center pieces as well!   Lodge made a similar style long pan, but its not likely they used a bottom gate for their patterns. Perfect for cooking bacon, pancakes, or other proteins.
